Welcome back to Talking Tails!
Getting new toys is such fun, but they don’t always have to come from the pet store. You can make great toys that will keep your dog amused for hours. We are tough on our toys, especially Joey. Removing limbs, squeakers, and stuffing are his favorite things to do! You (and our Mom!) can save money with the following homemade dog toys.
Water Bottle Chew Toy – Remove the label, cap, and ring from an empty water bottle. Cut off the tip of a sock and slip the bottle inside. Tie a knot at each end of the sock so it hugs the bottle tightly. Cut strips on each end of the knots. Tie knots on each of these strips for additional chewing fun!
Sock Chew Toy – Stuff multiple tube socks into one main sock. Tie the end of the main sock. Your dog has a great chew toy with no stuffing to pull out and spread around the house!
Shirt Tossing Toy – From an old shirt, cut fabric into two strips, approximately 6”x14” (or to any size that works best for your dog). Fold the fabric strips in half and wrap them around a small tennis-size ball; one that squeaks would be ideal. Tie a piece of ribbon tightly around the base of the ball, wrapping it several times. Cut the fabric “tails” into several 2” wide strips, then braid three strips together, making the braids as tight as possible. Secure each braid with a knot.
Fabric Rope Toy – Using old shirts or pieces of fleece, cut fabric into 9 strips, 2 inches wide by 24 inches long (or to any length that works best for your dog). You can add color to your toy by selecting shirts or fleece of multiple hues. Twist the strips together and tie a knot at the top of all 9 strips. Separate the strips into 3 sections of 3 strips each and braid from the knot down. Tie a knot at the end of the braid.
