Summer is here and that means fun at the beach! The sun, the sand, the water – what more can you ask for? Take the opportunity to get away and relax with your family, even if just for the day.
Taking your baby to the beach can be a fun and safe adventure with a little bit of planning. Here are a few safety tips to help you have a great time!
- Apply sunscreen – If your baby is over six months old, sunscreen is your best friend! Apply a full-spectrum coverage sunscreen specially formulated for babies frequently, as delicate baby skin can quickly burn. Test for skin sensitivity in advance by applying a small amount on baby’s arm or leg. The American Pediatric Association recommends avoiding sunscreen for babies younger than six months old and using other forms of sun protection – hat, sunglasses, umbrella, tent, and shade.
- Stay hydrated – If your baby is using a bottle, bring all supplies (e.g., breast milk, formula, water) in a cooler. Don’t forget the sippy cup for older babies. Staying extra-hydrated, and that includes mom, especially a nursing mom, is your objective when in the hot sun. Fresh air can increase a baby’s appetite, so pack pureed food for younger babies or finger foods, if your baby is eating solids.
- Watch the sand – Sand is great for building castles, but it can blow in baby’s eyes or irritate the skin. Water shoes will protect your baby’s feet from the sand, and napping away from the edge of the blanket will reduce sand exposure. If your baby is old enough to play in the sand, watch her/him carefully to avoid the eating of sand.
- Water caution – Dipping baby’s toes in the water can be fun, but be extremely cautious with your baby in the water. Strong tides, waves, and abrupt drop-offs are not safe for baby. You will survive being knocked over by a wave or having water rush over you, but this is not a safe environment for your baby. Remain in shallow, relatively calm water with your baby.
Relax and enjoy watching your baby discover a whole new world of sights, sounds, smells, and textures!
