Welcome back to Talking Tails!
Friday, June 26, is the 17th annual Take Your Dog To Work Day (TYDTWDay). Many businesses, even those that are not traditionally pet friendly, allow employees to bring their dog to work on this special day. TYDTWDay, created by Pet Sitters International (PSI), celebrates the great companionship of dogs. Additionally, recent research indicates that dogs in the workplace promote employee productivity, as well as lower stress and absenteeism. This sounds like a win-win situation to us because we enjoy getting out of the house. Our Mom takes us to the studio on many days and we love it! Buster was the original “shop dog,” and he has done a good job of training Joey to share this role.
Here are a few tips for a successful TYDTWDay.
- Keep your dog on a leash. Respect your coworkers’ space by putting your dog on a leash when outside of your office or cubicle. Those who want to pet your dog will find you! Mom keeps our leashes on us when she has clients because not everyone likes our kisses!
- Use a baby gate. Putting up a baby gate or closing your office door prevents your dog from making an unplanned “escape.” Joey is the king of “escapes” and, therefore, we are often put behind a baby gate at the studio!
- Dog-free zones. Recognize that some areas of your work place may be designated as dog-free. These places typically include eating areas and rest rooms. You don’t want to subject your co-workers to us begging for food!
- Dogs’ personal needs. Even though you are working, you cannot forget to attend to your dog’s personal needs. At regular intervals, take your dog out to relieve itself. Don’t forget to provide water, food, and treats for your dog. We want to underscore the “treats!!”
- A safe place. Your dog will be more comfortable and feel safe when s/he has a “place.” Bring a pillow, bed, blanket, towel, or crate for your dog. We both have a comfy dog bed at the studio…great for naps!
Hopefully, you will be able to go to work with your Mom or Dad on June 26. If you are a planner, mark your calendar for next year’s TYDTWDay – June 24, 2016. Talk to you soon.
