Welcome back to Talking Tails!
We’re headed to the beach!! As you pack up the family, don’t forget your canine companion. We love the beach as much as you do!
Here are a few tips for a fun and safe beach day with your dog. Just remember to check local ordinances before you head out because not all beaches permit dogs.
- Not all dogs can swim. Don’t assume your dog is an automatic swimmer. Some breeds, such as Corgis, Pugs, and Bulldogs, have a difficult time swimming simply due to their body build. Dogs entering the water for the first time should be carefully watched for their reaction and their ability to swim. Even if your dog is comfortable, it’s not a bad idea to invest in a doggie life vest and, of course, never leave your dog unsupervised in or near the water. Some dogs, like us, just don’t like the water. Love the beach, the sun….just not the water!
- Use sunscreen. Dogs can get sunburn just like humans. This is especially true for our canine buddies with short hair or pink skin and white hair. Apply a broad spectrum UVA and UVB sun screen specially formulated for dogs about 30 minutes before we hit the beach, paying particular attention to our ears, nose, belly, and any other shaved or exposed area. If your dog is allergic to sunscreen, an alternative is a light colored T-shirt. If you can pull it off, doggy goggles are not only cool looking, but protect your dog’s eyes from harmful UV rays. Check out Buster in the picture above…totally rocking them!
- Calm water may be best. Many dogs are fearful of large waves, boats, jet skis, and surf boards, so finding a calm area will be less stressful for your dog. If your dog suffers from arthritis or other joint issues, cold water can irritate the condition. Shallow water is usually warmer. If you are in the ocean, be aware that drinking too much salt water can make your dog sick. Our buddies, Davis and Maximus, love playing in the water…we watch them from the beach!
- Take breaks in the shade. When in the sun for an extended period of time, it is always a good idea to take breaks in the shade for a nap and fresh water. There are so many new things to see, smell, and hear, not to mention how much more strenuous it is to walk, run, and fetch in the sand, that we just need an occasional break. We always love to curl up on a beach towel in the shade of our tent and drink from our traveling water dispenser. Yes, we are spoiled!
- Rinse well. Whether you are at a fresh or salt water beach, be sure to rinse your dog thoroughly before heading home. Sand, salt, and microscopic organisms may be buried in your dog’s coat and could become irritating if not rinsed out with fresh water. Dry your dog’s ears since water in the ear canal could lead to an ear infection. Those are not pleasant!
Enjoy the summer at the beach with your dog! Talk to you soon.
