It is getting to be the time of year when moms and babies experience “cabin fever.” New moms are often concerned with taking baby out in the cold, however, being outdoors helps babies acclimate to the seasons and the day-night cycle. This can lead to better sleeping for baby! When I was a baby we lived in Chicago and we had serious winters. My mom tells me I loved being outside, for a short period of time, during the winter. Funny, now I hate northern winters!!
Newborns and babies cannot self-regulate their core temperature, thus losing body heat faster than adults. Babies are not able to warm themselves by shivering and do not have enough body fat to warm up once they are cold.
With a few cold weather tips, you and baby can enjoy some outdoor time.
Do you have other cold weather suggestions for new moms? Please, share.
