Baby Talk - 11/8/18

I just love newborn photo sessions! These usually occur within five to ten days of birth and the babies are just so precious. A few of my most recent new moms had a cesarean delivery. It was obvious that they were hurting. I just have them sit down and put up their feet during the session!

Here are a few tips for a quicker recovery.

  • Take your pain meds – This is not the time to be brave! Take your pain medications as prescribed for the first few days to avoid “chasing the pain.” If you get into this vicious cycle, it may be difficult to relieve the pain.
  • Get your rest – This may sound like an impossible task with a new baby, but is so important to your recovery. The number one rule is to sleep whenever your baby sleeps. Allowing family and friends to help with the baby and the housework will give you additional rest time. Every minute of rest counts!
  • Baby yourself – Plan ahead and keep all the things you need for you and baby close by (snacks, phone and charger, baby supplies, medicines, book, TV remote). In this way, you won’t have to get up very often. Additionally, avoid going up and down the stairs and don’t lift heavy items.
  • Take it slow – You just had a baby and major surgery, so take it easy. Increase your activity level slowly over the course of the next six to eight weeks. Follow your doctor’s advice as to getting back to your normal routine – driving, exercising, working.

Do you know other suggestions for recovery after a cesarean? Please, share.
