Baby Talk - 12/15/16

My sweet little friend, Anderson, is celebrating his first birthday this month. Where has the year gone? As I try to find the perfect birthday present, I am reminded of how his mom and other studio moms have discussed struggling to do justice to baby’s birthday celebration in the midst of other holiday festivities.

Here are a few tips to keep your little one’s big day special.

  • Plan a birthday party – Yes, it is a busy time of the year, however, with a little planning you can celebrate baby’s birthday and the holidays. Send birthday invitations out a little earlier than usual, recognizing that your guests may have several other holiday obligations on their calendars. Select a date and time during which only baby will be celebrated, with no holiday festivity add-ons.

  • Create a holiday-free space – Select a birthday theme and go with it! Holiday decorations should not creep into birthday festivities. Decorate the room with the birthday theme and remove, if necessary, any holiday decorations.

  • Have a birthday cake – A cake celebrating baby’s special day will definitely set the celebration apart from the holidays. Try to coordinate the cake decorations with the birthday theme.

  • Buy birthday gifts – Birthday and holiday gifts should not be one in the same. Avoid combination birthday and holiday gifts, if at all possible. Buy gifts for each separate occasion and wrap them in appropriate gift wrap. No holiday paper for the birthday party!

This may take some extra work at a very busy time of the year, but celebrating your baby’s special day begins a tradition of separating birthday and holiday activities.

What other tips do you have for celebrating a holiday birthday? Please, share!
