First year birthday portrait sessions are such an exciting time in the studio. Many of these little ones are members of the First Reflections Program, so we shared in the joy of watching them grow and develop over the year. The highlight of the birthday session is the cake smash. Vivian has just turned one and, as you can see, she loved her cake!

It’s time to celebrate baby’s first birthday! Here are a few party planning tips.

  • Timing is everything – No one wants to celebrate with a crabby baby! Plan the party for 60-90 minutes. Much longer and baby, as well as young guests, will lose interest and run out of energy. Schedule the party around nap time, so baby is well rested.
  • Less is more – A large number of guests can easily overwhelm baby. Keep the guest list short, so all, especially the birthday girl or boy, can relax and enjoy themselves.
  • Careful with the balloons – We all love balloons and babies are often fascinated with them. For safety purposes, opt for foil or Mylar balloons rather than latex.
  • Ask about food allergies – Check with your guests to determine if food allergies are a concern.  Planning party snacks to accommodate the needs of all guests will keep everyone happy.
  • Call in the reserves – As much as you think you can do it alone, asking for help will allow you to actually slow down and enjoy your baby’s first birthday party. Ask a close friend, family member, or babysitter to help out during the party.

Relax and enjoy baby’s first birthday!
