Baby Talk - Children Wearing Masks

Whoever thought we would be talking about children wearing face masks? I have had this conversation with several of my studio moms and with my friends who have young children.

Physicians recommend that children under the age of two do not wear a face mask. These little ones cannot reliably adjust or remove their masks if it becomes difficult for them to breathe. There are several things that parents can do to help children over the age of two understand why and become comfortable with wearing a face mask.

The most important thing that parents can do is to model the behavior. So, wear a mask whenever you ask your child to wear a mask. It may even be helpful to “practice” wearing a mask in the house for short periods of time, allowing your child to get used to wearing it. Secondly, using age-appropriate language, explain why your child is being asked to wear a mask. Simply, it prevents us from spreading germs from one person to another, so we are keeping everyone healthy. Be sure to address any fears, anxiety, or
questions your child may have about wearing a mask.

Make it fun! Involve your child in selecting a mask if ordering, picking out the fabric if being made at home, or decorating their mask if the fabric allows. Make little masks for some of their favorite stuffed animals. Draw a mask on the character in their favorite book. I remember my mom letting me and my sisters decorate our bike helmets, which we wore for rollerblading. We got to pick out our favorite colored helmet and used stickers to decorate them. We were proud to wear our “masterpieces!”

With all of this, do also remember to encourage safe distancing and hand washing with your child.

What suggestions do you have for helping your child wear a face mask? Please, share.
