Baby Talk - Patriotic Dessert

Happy July 4 th !! Hope you take time to relax and enjoy the holiday!

When I was growing up, my sisters and I would make patriotic snacks and desserts. We helped Mom when we were younger and took over doing them ourselves as we got older.

I am sharing here one of our favorites. We may recognize it, but we made substitutions!! They are made with pudding and pound cake, but we used ice cream instead. So much more delicious! The cool part is the colorful shell that holds everything, made of course with red, white, and blue melting wafers.

Here are the steps:

  • Melt ¾ cup of red wafers in the microwave – 30-second intervals for about two minutes. Do the same with the white and blue wafers.
  • Put cupcake liners into a cupcake pan. Foil liners work best. You could also use a baking sheet instead.
  • Use a pastry brush to “paint” the cupcake liner with the melted wafers. Be creative. Paint some colors along the bottom, others up the side. Paint the bottom one color and the sides with the other colors. Whatever works for you! Ours were more “abstract” in design when we were little and became more “intentional” as we got older.
  • Put them into the refrigerator to set for about 5 minutes. Bring them back out and apply a second coat of the melted wafers. Back in the refrigerator for 10 more minutes.
  • Carefully peel the foil from the chilled cups. We filled our “patriotic cups” with ice cream and topped them with red, white, and blue sprinkles. Delicious!
  • Alternatively, you can put a round piece of pound cake in the bottom of each cup and then fill with vanilla pudding. Top with blueberries and sliced strawberries. A dollop of whipped cream finishes it off!

Either way, these are delicious and fun to make with your little one.

What fun things do you bake for July 4th ? Please, share.
