Talking Tails - 2/6/18

Welcome back to Talking Tails!

Hope everyone is surviving the winter. We are hoping that spring is just around the corner!

During these dreary, cold days we find ourselves to be rather sleepy. So, feeling a little guilty about this behavior, we looked into dogs’ sleep habits.

We discovered that the average dog spends 12-14 hours sleeping. We must be above average! The amount of sleep an individual dog needs depends on a variety of factors. First, it varies by age. Older dogs, we call them senior dogs since Buster is in this category, need more sleep since the body functions more slowly and the normal tasks are a bit more draining. On the other end of the spectrum are the puppies, who also need more sleep. They burn tons of energy when awake, since they barely sit still, and
need much more sleep than the adult dog.

Your breed can have an impact on your sleeping needs. Working dogs, those bred to perform a particular task, are often more alert during the day. Their sleep requirements are less than the rest of us, who really have no specific job. So, we see no reason not to use an afternoon for a nap!

Your size, don’t mean to get personal here, can affect the amount of sleep needed. The bigger you are, the more sleep required. Larger dogs are just carrying around more weight, which causes them to tire more quickly. Smaller dogs, just due to their size, often require less sleep. Not sure how to explain this one away since we are small dogs, but love to sleep!

Sweet dreams!

Talk to you soon!

Buster and Joey
