Talking Tails -3/15/16

Welcome back to Talking Tails!

Buster just recently went to the vet to have his teeth cleaned (notice his pearly white in the above picture!). He really didn’t mind because he and the vet are BFFs. Joey, however, would be happy if he never had to go to the vet again! We discovered that teeth cleaning for dogs is quite the ordeal; not nearly as simple as it is for humans. The big difference is that dogs are actually anesthetized for the procedure. Buster came home from his day at the vet still a bit dazed and was quite tired for the remainder of the evening. So, Joey kept watch over him to be sure “his Buster” would return. And return he did the following morning as if nothing had happened!

Buster learned a lot about how to care for his teeth between teeth cleanings. First of all, the best way to practice good dental care is to have your teeth brushed every week. Have your human use a canine toothbrush and toothpaste. They should not share their toothpaste with you since human toothpaste has fluoride, which is poisonous to dogs. Now you have to do your part and let your human brush your teeth, without any complaints from you. This is the hard part for Joey because our Mom has tried and tried, but Joey is so uncooperative.

If you are like Joey, your teeth still have hope! Although not as good as teeth brushing, you can do a few things to maintain your teeth. Eating dry food is better than soft food because the soft food can stick to your teeth and cause decay. Talk about bad breath! Chew bones and chew toys can also help to remove build-up on your teeth. Many of the synthetic chews are designed specifically to strengthen your gums and teeth.

Let’s hear it for good teeth brushing, sparkling teeth, and fresh breath!

Talk to you soon!
