Welcome back to Talking Tails!

With the coming of cooler weather, we are getting excited for trips to the dog park. It is just too hot in the summer for us to go….alright we are wimps! Getting back to the park allows us to interact with other canine buddies and to play outside. It is great to get out of the house! Buster and our cousin, Jade, went to a dog park in New York. For you southern dogs, the “white stuff” in the picture is snow. And, yes, it is cold!!

If you’re heading to the dog park, consider the following etiquette tips.

  • Know your dog. Although we enjoy getting to meet lots of canines at the park, some dogs just don’t belong there. Dogs that don’t play well with others make it hard for everyone to have a good time. If your dog has not been around other dogs, start with smaller interactions, such as play dates with one or two other dogs, before taking on the dog park scene.
  • Be considerate of other dogs. Certain dogs should not be brought to the dog park. Unneutered males have higher testosterone levels, making them more aggressive. Females in heat cause lots of problems at the park. Dogs not current with their vaccinations put all of us at the park at risk. If your dog has fleas, parasites, or is sick, stay home. We don’t want to catch anything. Do us all a favor and pick up after your dog. Not doing so is just nasty!
  • Supervise your dog. We are really counting on you to watch us play and keep us safe from any bullies at the park. Put away your smartphone. Keep chatting with other dog owners to a minimum. Everyone appreciates when dog owners take responsibility for their pet’s behavior.
  • Have fun! Take your dog to a park that s/he enjoys, but don’t hesitate to leave if things go south. Aggressive dogs, rough play, or just not feeling up to romping in the park are all reasons that we have left parks.

Are there other tips you have for an enjoyable time at the dog park? Please, share your thoughts!

Talk to you soon!

Buster and Joey
