Talking Tails - Dog Car Safety

Welcome back to Talking Tails!

Some of us may be taking to the road with our humans for a summer vacation, or for at least a little “away time.” In the midst of the pandemic, car travel may be safer than bus, train, or plane excursions. This can be super fun, but we want to do so safely. Buster would be so proud of me, as we always referred to him as “Mr. Safety!”

Consider buckling up! We can have our very own seat belt or car harness. Your human can buy these, which are specially designed for dogs. The doggie belt rests against our chest and abdomen and can be attached to the car’s seat belt. This will keep us safe in the event of an accident. Let’s not even think about that!

A dog crate is another option for safe car travel. If you are a bit anxious when your travel – barking at everything that passes the car – this may be a good option. Yep, you know who you are! The crate can provide you with a sense of comfort. It can sit right on the seat and be secured with the car’s seat belt.

We would love to sit in our human’s lap for the entire trip, or at least ride shotgun! Sadly, this is not a safe option. Several types of “guards” or “barriers” can be installed in the back seat, thus shutting off access to the front seat. These work especially well in the back of SUVs, hatchbacks, and vans.

Be safe and happy travels!

Talk to you soon!
Joey
