Talking Tails - Dog Dental Health

Welcome back to Talking Tails!

Let’s talk about oral hygiene today. Not a popular topic, I know, but dental issues can cause serious health issues. Untreated buildup of plaque and tartar can cause gum inflammation, kidney disease, and heart disease. Many of us develop some level of oral disease by the time we are two years old. None of this sounds good!

The best way to address oral health is through regular brushing. I know, I know…not our favorite thing to do. I don’t know what gets into me, but I become very upset when my humans come at me with a toothbrush. I am so bad, that they have actually stopped trying. I feel ashamed, but just can’t help myself! It is best to start an oral hygiene routine when you are a puppy – quite a long time ago for me. Daily, gentle brushing with plenty of praise from your human does the job!

For the rest of us, there are other approaches to maintaining good oral health. My preference is dental chews, which scrape the “junk” off my teeth, while I enjoy them. Some of my furry friends use water bowl additives, which defend against tartar and plaque build-up. As an added benefit, they also make
your breath smell better. Who could not use that? Another option, assuming you don’t mind things in your mouth, are dental wipes. Your human rubs the textured surface of the wipe over your teeth, and poof, clean as a whistle!

Your vet will also check your teeth during your annual visit. If necessary, you may need to supplement your oral hygiene routine with a professional teeth cleaning.

Talk to you soon!
Joey
