Talking Tails - Halloween Safety

Welcome back to Talking Tails!

It’s almost Halloween time!! I always know the season is upon us when my Mom starts taking pictures of me in costumes. I get to be her studio model!

Halloween means it is also candy time, which is good for humans, but not for us, my furry friends. Most candy is made with xylitol, which could be deadly. Chocolate contains theobromine, which can make us quite sick. Based on my experience, unfortunately, I can verify that fact.

To avoid getting into “trouble” with Halloween treats, it may be best to just find your own place during trick-or-treating. With all the excitement and children coming and going, which may leave you unsupervised, you might just help yourself to some candy. I opt to spend the evening in my humans’ bedroom. I have my favorite toys and a few dog treats that keep me busy.

If you are like me, you too can sniff out chocolate! I know it is not good for me, but if I can reach it, I have to have some…I know that is bad! For our safety, humans should store the Halloween candy in the upper kitchen cabinets, possibly in a jar or container.

It you don’t listen to me and must experience it for yourself, tell your humans to note how much candy you ate. This is very important information to share with the veterinarian. Yes, buddy, that is where you will be headed and it will not be a pleasant visit, believe me.

Just as a side note, it might be a good idea to share the ASPCA poison control phone number (888-426-4435) with your humans. This line is operated 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Hope you have a happy and safe Halloween!
Talk to you soon!
Joey
