In the U.S., about 3 in 100 births result in twins or triplets. While twins can bring double the joy, they can also, at least initially, be double the work! Having newborns in the studio is always a special day! Recently we were doubly blessed by having twins in for their newborn session. Summer and Hail are absolutely adorable and had a great shoot!
Here are a few helpful tips to get you through the first few months of raising twins.
- It’s all about a schedule – As best as you can, getting the two babies’ schedules in sync can be a matter of survival! If this does not occur, you could be on nonstop round-the clock baby duty, with one waking up as one is going down for a nap. This type of schedule is not sustainable and leaves you with little energy to bond with your twin babies.
- One crib works – Initially, putting newborn twins in the same crib is fine and often encouraged by pediatricians. Having each other close is comforting, since they shared your womb, and often results in the babies sleeping better. A crib divider can be added once they start wiggling and risk bumping into each other. After a few months, separate cribs are optimal.
- Dinner is served – Whether you nurse or bottle feed, simultaneously feeding your twin babies is encouraged. Whatever feeding arrangement works best for you and your babies – nursing both babies, nursing one and bottle feeding the other, or bottle feeding both babies – feeding them at the same time will simplify your life. When feeding baby one after the other, you may be just finishing feeding the second baby when the first one is ready to eat again.
- Roll with the changes – Everyone knows that schedules cannot be maintained 100% of the time. If one baby is sick or if you are traveling with the twins, schedules may have to be temporarily adjusted.
Enjoy this time with your precious newborn babies. Before you know it, they will be talking and walking!
