Talking Tails - 10/21/15

Welcome back to Talking Tails!

The spookiest night of the year will soon be here! Halloween is in the air! We know it is a great time for fun and festivity for humans, but for many dogs it is truly scary. We took a poll at doggy day care and it was unanimous…one of our least favorite holidays. We did agree, however, that most of us enjoy dressing up in costumes. Our mom can catch you in your cool look at her Halloween mini-sessions scheduled for Friday, October 23, and Saturday, October 24. We look so cute in our Halloween best, so why not capture it in a photograph?

Here are a few things that will make Halloween safe for your canine friend.

  • No treats for us! – We will beg for treats from that candy bowl and even though we will be persistent, don’t give in to us. Chocolate is very dangerous for us and our feline friends. We don’t want to spend the night at the vet or Poison Control Center.
  • A safe room, please! – Doorbells, strangers, costumes, loud voices, and the door opening and closing can all be stressful for us. Some of us are territorial and could potentially growl at children. We would feel so much better in a separate safe room far away from the front door.
  • ID or microchip, for sure! – In the event we bolt out the open front door, not our best move, be sure that we have identification. It is more difficult for us to find our way in the dark and all the costumed people can make it more confusing for us to find our way back home. Having proper identification will increase our chances of being returned to you.
  • Pumpkins, corn, and candles, oh no! – Pumpkins, decorative corn, and gourds are nontoxic if we nibble on them, but they can make our stomach upset. Candles make jack-o-lanterns look super cool, but without meaning to, we could knock them over and cause a fire.

Do you have other tips for making Halloween less scary for your dog? Please, share!

Talk to you soon!

Buster and Joey
