Welcome back to Talking Tails!

With summer just around the corner, we are excited about vacation time! We see and “talk” to lots of dogs when we are traveling with our Mom and Dad. Bringing your dog along on vacations makes it more fun for everyone!

The tips below will keep your dog safe on car trips.

  • Love the crate. The safest way for your dog to travel is in a crate that is secured to the seat. This keeps the driver from being distracted by a roaming dog and keeps your dog safe in the event of an accident. Never put your dog in the back of an open truck, as this is dangerous and possibly fatal.
  • Protect our eyes. Although we look adorable riding with our heads out the window, particles of dust or debris blown by the wind may cause eye injuries.
  • No shotgun. While we love being the copilot, it is safest for your dog to travel in the back seat. If an airbag deploys in the passenger seat, it can injure your dog.
  • Keep us comfortable. Be sure your dog has access to water during the trip and that fresh air from the window or the air conditioner is flowing through the crate.
  • Let us exercise. Frequent stops for exercise and potty breaks are most appreciated! We get bored sitting in the car and the stops help us to get out some of our energy,
  • Far from home. We love to explore, but we don’t want to get lost on vacation. Have your dog’s ID tags on the collar or have your dog microchipped for easy identification if you get separated.
  • Don’t leave us alone in the car. At 72 degrees outside, a car can heat up to 116 degrees within an hour. At 85 degrees, even with the window slightly open, the internal car temperature can reach 102 degrees in ten minutes. In addition to dehydration, heat stroke, irreversible organ damage or death, leaving your dog alone in a car is an invitation to pet thieves.

Happy travels! Talk to you soon.
